Students Discuss Concerns and Hopes for an AI-Driven Workplace
In a recent discussion, The Learning Network explored students’ perspectives on the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on the future of work. The conversation was prompted by reflections from voice actor Hank Azaria on AI’s potential to reshape the entertainment industry.
Azaria, who has voiced over 100 characters on “The Simpsons,” expressed concern about the implications of AI for his profession. Responding to this, students offered insights that ranged from apprehension to optimism.
Students from Blaine High School in Blaine, Minnesota; Hilton Head Preparatory School in Hilton Head, South Carolina; and West Chicago Community High School in West Chicago, Illinois, shared their insights. Student comments have been lightly edited for length and clarity.
Job Security Fears and Career Planning
Many students expressed concern about the possibility of AI replacing human jobs. This apprehension is influencing their post-high school plans and career choices.
One student, Soha, stated: “As a person planning to major in computer science, I am worried about AI taking over human jobs. Tech jobs are one of the most vulnerable to being replaced by AI, as they involve repetitive logical tasks which can be easily done by AI. I always fear that this would make my future degree useless, making me more inclined to think about majoring in math in college. Entering my senior year, I feel both excited and anxious for college, as I have always been passionate about tech since middle school, but with the sudden emergence of AI replacing the need to have people working in tech, I don’t feel that I can get a job.”
