Meta’s AI Chatbot to Get Standalone App

Meta is reportedly planning to launch a standalone application for its AI chatbot, a move that could help the company reach users outside of its existing social media ecosystem.

According to a CNBC report, which The Verge can also confirm, the app could launch as early as the second quarter of 2025. This would position Meta alongside competitors like OpenAI (ChatGPT), Google (Gemini), and Microsoft (Copilot), all of whom have already released standalone AI applications.

Currently, Meta’s AI chatbot is integrated across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. A dedicated app would give the company a new avenue to attract users who don’t actively use those platforms.

Like its rivals, Meta AI can handle a variety of tasks, including answering questions, generating images, and editing photos. It recently gained the ability to utilize “memory” features to offer improved recommendations.

In response to the news, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman jokingly commented, “ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app.” Meta declined to comment on the report. Meta has been significantly increasing its investment in AI. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced an investment of up to $65 billion to further the company’s AI ambitions, with a dedicated AI event planned for April 29th.
