Police in Kolkata, India, have raided and shut down a fake call center that was posing as Microsoft technical support and defrauding United States citizens. Authorities seized electronic devices, forged documents, and US-issued checks during the raid.
The call center was operating from a flat in the Narayanpur area of Kolkata. According to officials, the individuals running the operation targeted US citizens with bulk emails, prompting victims to call a fraudulent helpline. Posing as Microsoft agents, the scammers then convinced victims to pay for fake technical support services.
During the raid on Saturday afternoon, the operators were unable to provide legitimate documentation for their business and were immediately detained. Preliminary investigations revealed that the fraudsters used forged documents and Hawala transactions to facilitate their operation.
A case has been filed in Narayanpur under the appropriate sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections 20/21 of the Indian Telegraph Act. Further investigation is ongoing.
