Apple Delays Siri Upgrade, Signaling AI Challenges
In a move that underscores the intensifying competition in the artificial intelligence (AI) arena, Apple has reportedly delayed the release of a significant upgrade to its virtual assistant, Siri. The updated version, initially anticipated for the first half of 2025, is now slated for a rollout sometime in the following year.
“It’s going to take us longer than we thought to deliver on these features and we anticipate rolling them out in the coming year,” Daring Fireball reported, quoting Apple spokesperson Jacqueline Roy. This delay highlights the challenges Apple faces as it strives to keep pace with rivals in the fast-moving world of AI.
Apple’s strategy hinges on leveraging access to users’ personal information and integrating Siri across multiple applications, allowing for enhanced contextual awareness and personalized assistance. This approach is intended to make Siri particularly helpful for users, differentiating it from competitors and anchoring its AI features in users’ daily digital lives.

Apple’s delay comes as other tech giants are aggressively pursuing AI advancements. Google and Samsung, for example, are embedding AI features into everyday user experiences. Meanwhile, Amazon is preparing to release an AI version of its Alexa assistant in the US, offering early access to interested users.
Apple has already launched its AI offerings under the ‘Apple Intelligence’ banner. This software, available in select English-speaking markets and expanding to more regions from April onwards, can rephrase and summarize text, as well as generate unique emojis based on user descriptions. The delay of the Siri upgrade suggests that delivering a fully realized, powerful AI experience is proving more complex than anticipated.
With competitors rapidly innovating in the AI space with offerings such as ChatGPT, Gemini and DeepSeek, the pressure increases on Apple to ensure that Siri’s enhancements are substantial and deliver a competitive user experience within the smartphone landscape.
