Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon, has initiated a new group specifically dedicated to the development of AI agents, Reuters reported on Tuesday. This strategic move underscores Amazon’s significant investment and commitment to the burgeoning field of automated AI systems.
In an internal email to AWS staff, AWS CEO Matt Garman emphasized the immense potential of agentic AI, describing it as “the next multi-billion business for AWS.” This internal communication demonstrates Amazon’s high expectations for this technology. The new group, tasked with spearheading these initiatives, will be led by Swami Sivasubramanian, a veteran AWS executive who previously headed the company’s AI and data teams.
Amazon’s move aligns with a broader trend in the tech industry, as companies increasingly focus on developing sophisticated AI agents. Last week, Amazon showcased some agentic capabilities slated for Alexa+, an advanced iteration of its consumer voice assistant. Demonstrations revealed Alexa+’s ability to autonomously perform tasks like booking Uber rides and navigating websites, which typically require human intervention.
Beyond consumer applications, Amazon’s AWS is also exploring the development of enterprise agents, potentially positioning itself to contend with industry leaders such as Salesforce and Microsoft. The focus is on creating AI systems designed to automate various work-related tasks for customers, further broadening the scope of this initiative.
