5G Smartphone Sales Surge on Amazon India
Amazon India is experiencing a boom in 5G smartphone sales, with significant growth across various price segments, according to Zeba Khan, Director, Consumer Electronics, Amazon India. The e-commerce platform has seen a more than tenfold increase in sales of 5G phones priced under ₹10,000.
This growth is fueled by several factors, including increased internet penetration, a trend towards premiumization, and stabilizing inflation. “Smartphone growth is particularly strong in the premium segment (₹30K and above) and the ₹15-20K segment, fueled by consumer demand for 5G technology and improved features,” Khan told The Hindu. She noted that approximately 70% of the demand originates from Tier 2 and 3 cities, highlighting a strong shift towards online purchasing.
Khan was in Delhi to attend the launch of the iQOO Neo 10R, a mid-segment smartphone exclusive to Amazon. She emphasized the significance of Prime customers, who contribute a substantial portion of the platform’s business. “We have a very large prime customer base, like literally half our business almost comes from Prime customers,” she stated.
Top Performers and Emerging Trends
OnePlus, iQOO, Samsung, Xiaomi, and Realme have been identified as the top-performing brands on Amazon India. Khan also highlighted the growing demand for AI-powered features in smartphones, predicting that AI segment contributions will reach 15-20% by 2025.
Consumers are increasingly prioritizing features such as camera quality, battery performance, and 5G capabilities when selecting smartphones. Amazon’s AI-powered shopping assistant, Rufus, is assisting customers in navigating the technical aspects of smartphone selection based on their needs.
Expanded Services and Market Dynamics
Amazon is expanding its services to enhance the customer experience, including phone setup assistance in 300 cities, offering data transfer and device setup services for a fee. Khan mentioned that this service has received positive customer reviews, with a 4.8-star rating.
The gaming smartphone segment likewise is experiencing substantial growth, mirroring trends in the gaming laptop market.
