A coalition of countries, influential tech corporations, and major energy users have announced their commitment to substantially increase nuclear energy capacity worldwide. The initiative, unveiled at the sidelines of the CERAWeek 2025 energy conference in Houston, is spearheaded by the World Nuclear Association (WNA) and aims to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050.
This ambitious goal sees support from prominent tech companies, including Google, Amazon, and Meta Platforms. These firms are already making significant investments in nuclear technology. Amazon, for instance, signed three agreements in October 2024 to develop small modular reactors (SMRs).
Companies are viewing nuclear energy as a strategic investment for their future operations. In 2024, Google signed the inaugural corporate agreement to purchase power from multiple SMRs. Furthermore, in May 2023, Microsoft entered into a nuclear fusion power deal with Helion Energy.
The cross-sector pledge emphasizes the critical role of nuclear energy in enhancing energy security and providing a continuous supply of clean energy. The initiative has garnered support from 14 major global banks and financial institutions, alongside 140 nuclear industry companies and 31 countries, including Canada, France, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
“Today, a cross-industry group of large energy users signed a pledge supporting the goal of at least tripling global nuclear capacity by 2050,” the WNA stated. “This marks the first instance of major businesses beyond the nuclear sector coming together to publicly endorse a comprehensive expansion of nuclear power to meet growing global energy demand. They are also urging other energy users to support the goal to triple nuclear energy.”
This consolidated appeal, facilitated by the World Nuclear Association, underscores the participating companies’ recognition of nuclear energy’s clean, reliable, and abundant power to drive their future growth while enhancing energy security. The pledge reflects a commitment to a sustainable future.
Lucia Tian, Head of Clean Energy & Decarbonization Technologies at Google, stated, “We are proud to sign a pledge in support of tripling nuclear capacity by 2050, as nuclear power will be pivotal in building a reliable, secure, and sustainable energy future. Google will continue to work alongside our partners to accelerate the commercialisation of advanced nuclear technologies that can provide the around-the-clock clean energy necessary to meet growing electricity demand around the world.”
Brandon Oyer, Head of Americas Energy and Water for Amazon Web Service, added, “Accelerating nuclear energy development will be critical to strengthening our nation’s security, meeting future energy demands, and addressing climate change. Amazon supports the World Nuclear Association’s pledge, and is proud to have invested more than $1 billion over the last year in nuclear energy projects and technologies, which is part of our broader Climate Pledge commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2040.”
Sama Bilbao y Leon, Director General of the World Nuclear Association, which represents the global nuclear industry and led the Pledge initiative, noted, “The unprecedented support announced today by some of the world’s most influential companies to at least triple global nuclear capacity by 2050 sends a clear signal to accelerate policy, finance and regulatory changes that enable the rapid expansion of nuclear power.”
The WNA anticipates further support for the initiative from industries like maritime, aviation, and oil and gas in the coming months. Nuclear energy currently accounts for 9 percent of the world’s electricity generation, with 439 reactors in operation. As of the start of 2025, there were approximately 411 operating nuclear power reactors globally with a combined capacity of 371 gigawatts.
