Freed: An AI-Powered Solution for Clinician Burnout

Imagine a doctor, dedicated and driven, whose passion is helping people. After years of training, they’re finally seeing patients, realizing their dreams. But instead of focusing solely on patient care, they’re overwhelmed by documentation and administrative tasks, spending countless hours on paperwork, often late into the night and on weekends. This was the experience of Dr. Gabi Meckler, a family physician in Santa Rosa, California.

Dr. Meckler’s experience is not unique. Studies have shown that clinicians spend double the time on documentation compared to the time spent interacting with patients. The American Medical Association found that nearly half of doctors reported burnout, and almost a third are considering leaving the field altogether.

    Team Freed.
    Team Freed.

Dr. Meckler knew there had to be a better way, and so did her husband, Erez Druk, then an engineer at Facebook.

    The Birth of Freed

Erez wanted to help his wife and other clinicians reclaim their time. Together with co-founder Andrey Bannikov, he designed Freed, an AI-powered clinician assistant. The solution gained traction quickly, spreading through small and medium-sized independent medical practices across the country.

Freed’s technology is designed to transform the daily lives of clinicians. During a patient visit, Freed transcribes audio and generates draft medical notes. Doctors can then review and edit the notes. The platform learns from each user, adapting its style and terminology, and incorporating their preferences for phrasing, template layouts, and medical vocabulary. After the patient leaves, Freed charts the visit and integrates the record into the EHR system.

    Impact and Recognition

The impact of Freed is significant. Doctors are saving time on after-hours paperwork, enabling them to dedicate more time and attention to their patients, and creating more balance in their lives. The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive:

“Thanks to Freed, I close my computer and I’m done for the day. My kids get all of me.”

“I can focus on what really matters—my patients.”

In many ways, Freed is a testament to Erez’s dedication to his wife and to doctors like her, giving them back precious time.

    The Team Behind Freed

Erez and Andrey’s customer focus and rapid growth caught the attention of investors. Erez has always pursued his passions with intense focus. His talents led him to study at Berklee School of Music followed by the Israel Institute of Technology’s Technion University. After graduation, he joined Facebook, where he met Andrey. Their shared commitment to innovation led to a strong partnership and a shared mission to improve healthcare experiences for clinicians and patients.

Today, Freed serves over 17,000 providers across almost 100 medical specialties, from mental health to pediatrics. Freed is giving doctors peace of mind and the time to focus on what matters most.
