Amazon is currently testing the use of artificial intelligence to create dubbed versions of some movies and television series available through its Prime Video streaming service.
The company announced this week that it is trialing AI-assisted dubbing – the process of replacing an original audio track with a translated one – for certain licensed titles that previously lacked dubbed versions. One of the first titles to receive this treatment is the 2003 animated film “El Cid: La Leyenda.”
The Seattle-based technology giant stated that its AI-aided dubbing service will initially support English and Latin American Spanish. The service will launch with twelve licensed titles.
According to Amazon, the program will utilize a ‘hybrid approach,’ allowing ‘local professionals to collaborate with AI to ensure quality control.’ This suggests a system where AI handles much of the initial translation and voice synchronization, but human editors and audio engineers will review and refine the result.
Other major tech companies have also begun incorporating AI-powered dubbing into their platforms. Last year, YouTube launched a feature permitting content creators to translate their videos into multiple languages. Additionally, Meta revealed in September that it was piloting an AI tool that automatically translates voices in Reels.
