Manus AI Agent: A Chinese Startup’s Bid to Reshape Autonomous Task Execution

Manus, an AI agent developed by Chinese startup Monica, is emerging as a notable player in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. This system distinguishes itself through its capacity to execute complex tasks autonomously, ranging from financial analysis to travel planning. Early demonstrations have garnered significant attention, leading to speculation that Manus could represent a major leap forward in AI capabilities.

The Manus website showcases detailed examples of how the agent processes initial prompts and completes tasks, though public access remains limited.

Manus operates by translating natural language prompts into actions, exemplified by its ability to build and publish an interactive dashboard for Tesla stock analysis after receiving a simple text request. The system’s core function is to take user instructions and turn them into completed deliverables.

    Technical Architecture and Capabilities

Recent reports indicate that Manus utilizes Claude Sonnet, combined with open-source technologies, including the Browser Use software. User “Jian” discovered this by analyzing the sandbox runtime code from Manus AI. Yichao “Peak” Ji, Manus’ chief researcher, confirmed the system’s basic architecture and provided additional technical implementation details. The platform employs a multi-agent system, with users interacting strictly through an executor agent. This agent has no direct access to the knowledge or planning agents, enhancing context length control and reducing the likelihood of the hallucinations experienced by AI that are ‘jailbroken’. Ji also emphasized the project’s heavy reliance on open-source technologies.

Currently, Manus leverages Claude 3.5 Sonnet v1 and various fine-tuned Qwen models, with the team exploring the potential of Sonnet 3.7. The company intends to release several elements of the technology as open source soon.

    Performance and Benchmarking

Claims by Monica suggest that Manus outperforms OpenAI’s ‘deep research’ feature on the GAIA benchmark, which assesses AI agents on practical tasks. The agent is said to set performance records on all GAIA benchmark difficulty levels, which are presented in a way that may inflate performance gains. Initial testing indicates that Manus operates in both standard and high-performance modes.

Manus claims to have set performance records on all GAIA benchmark difficulty levels. The graph starts the x-axis at 30% instead of 0%, which makes Manus' performance lead look more dramatic.

This suggests the incorporation of a reasoning model similar to OpenAI’s Operator, which enhances output quality with longer processing times.

    Origins and Development

The team behind Manus has a track record of prior achievements in the AI sector. Monica was founded in 2022 by Xiao Hong, who previously developed a browser extension that integrated multiple language models. The startup secured backing from significant Chinese investors, including ZhenFund and Tencent. Co-founder Ji Yichao contributed experience from founding Peak Labs and developing the Magi search engine. Hong’s earlier ventures include Nightingale Technology, where he created two AI assistants, “Yi Ban” and “Wei Ban,” which gained over two million corporate users.

    Challenges and the Future

Despite promising early results, the system is currently invite-only. Product partner Zhang Tao stated that the current version is preliminary and still far from the final product. As such, the long-term potential and precise capabilities of Manus remain largely unknown. The system’s underlying technological design is subject to ongoing inquiry.

The future is looking bright for Manus. The company plans to open-source portions of the technology later this year, acknowledging its foundations in open-source development. The emergence of Manus occurs within a larger, highly competitive AI landscape, drawing comparisons to other Chinese startups like Deepseek.

The Expanding Landscape of Autonomous AI

The race to develop advanced AI agents is ongoing, with various players making their mark. OpenAI’s Operator and a new multi-agent framework, “Swarm,” are in development, although early testing presented notable reliability difficulties. Security experts emphasize the need for caution as AI agents gain access to users’ personal information.

In conclusion, Manus represents a noteworthy development in the field of autonomous AI agents. The company’s commitment to open-source technology and its demonstrations of complex task execution, combined with the backing of prominent investors, position Manus as a key player to watch in the years ahead.
