Amazon, Google, and Meta have signed a pledge to triple global nuclear power generation by 2050. This commitment reflects a growing recognition of nuclear energy’s role in meeting the surging electricity demands of artificial intelligence.

The pledge, announced Wednesday at the CERAWeek conference in Houston, brings together technology giants and major energy players. Joining the tech companies are Occidental Petroleum, Dow Chemical, and Siemens Energy. The World Nuclear Association facilitated the initiative.

This push toward nuclear power highlights the convergence of the technology and energy sectors, both responding to the anticipated expansion of AI-driven data centers. These facilities require significant and reliable power sources.

“Google will continue to work alongside our partners to accelerate the commercialization of advanced nuclear technologies that can provide the around-the-clock clean energy necessary to meet growing electricity demand around the world,” stated Lucia Tian, Google’s head of clean energy and decarbonization technologies.

Brandon Oyer, Amazon Web Services’ head of energy and water for the Americas, added, “Accelerating nuclear energy development will be critical to strengthening our nation’s security, meeting future energy demands, and addressing climate change.”
