Microsoft to Launch Data Centers in Malaysia in Q2 2025
KUALA LUMPUR – Microsoft is set to launch its inaugural cloud region in Malaysia, featuring three data centers, by the middle of 2025. This initiative follows the company’s announcement nearly a year ago of a substantial $2.2 billion investment in the Southeast Asian nation.
These data centers, collectively named the Malaysia West cloud, will be situated within the greater Kuala Lumpur area, with operations scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2025, according to Laurence Si, the managing director of Microsoft Malaysia.
While Microsoft did not disclose the specific capacity of these data centers, Si addressed queries regarding potential challenges related to U.S. export controls on semiconductor chips. He indicated that the company is closely monitoring the situation.
“At this point, everything is status quo for us. We do have a good relationship with all the various stakeholders. Everything that we intend to invest and go live with in our region, that continues to stay on track,” Si stated.
In May of the previous year, Microsoft revealed its commitment to invest $2.2 billion over the subsequent four years. The funds are earmarked for expanding its cloud and artificial intelligence services across Malaysia.
Si also projected that Microsoft’s investments in Malaysia over the next four years would generate $10.9 billion in revenue and create over 37,000 jobs.
“Local businesses and organisations will be able to innovate faster and more securely, driving the country’s progress towards becoming the hub for cloud and AI growth in Southeast Asia”, Si said.
