Snapchat has launched new AI-generated Lenses, but only for its Platinum subscribers. This feature, announced Wednesday, adds a level of sophistication to the platform’s existing AR capabilities.

For those unfamiliar, Snapchat Lenses are AR filters within the app that allow users to apply real-time effects to their photos and videos. The new AI-driven Lenses aim to make these effects even more lifelike. Snapchat is utilizing an “in-house built generative video model” to power these new features.
Initially, three AI Video Lenses are available. Two of them, called Raccoon and Fox, are designed to animate furry characters and interact with the user. The third, named Spring Flowers, provides a zoom-out effect, simulating the appearance of holding a bouquet of flowers.
Platinum subscribers can find these new Lenses in the carousel alongside the other AR filters. Due to the time needed to process AI-generated videos, users can continue to browse the app while their video is created. Snapchat has indicated that more AI Video Lenses will be released in the future.
This move follows similar developments from competitors. Instagram announced in December that it is also developing realistic AI-based filters to replace its current AR filters, although these have yet to be released to users.
Snapchat is available for free on the App Store and requires an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14 or later.
