Amazon’s Vega OS: Android Replacement for Fire TV and Other Devices

    Amazon’s Custom OS Development

Amazon is preparing to launch Vega OS, a custom Linux-based operating system designed to replace Android on its smart TVs, tablets, and Echo devices. According to a report by LowPass dated April 17, the new OS is expected to arrive by the end of 2025. The first device to ship with Vega OS-powered Fire TV is likely to be a Fire TV Stick, anticipated later this year.

    Key Features and Implications

Vega OS will be used across various Amazon devices, including smart TVs, tablets, and Echo smart speakers like the Echo Show 5, Echo Hub smart display, and Echo Spot smart clock. This move will allow Amazon to tailor its devices for better performance and efficiency. However, it presents a challenge in attracting developers to build apps for the new platform.

The transition from Android Open Source Project (AOSP) to Vega OS will reduce Amazon’s dependence on Google. However, this shift means developers will no longer be able to sideload Android apps not available on the Amazon Appstore. Amazon is likely to ensure that popular apps are available from day one on Vega OS.

    Device Compatibility and Future Updates

Vega OS is expected to launch with new devices, while existing Fire TVs and Echo devices with screens will likely continue running the Android-based operating system. Older devices may eventually miss out on new features as Amazon could restrict some updates to Vega OS-powered hardware.

The development of Vega OS indicates Amazon’s efforts to enhance its ecosystem’s independence and performance. While the initial transition may pose challenges for developers and users, it could lead to improved device functionality and user experience in the long run.
