OpenAI in Talks to Acquire AI-Powered Coding Tool Windsurf

OpenAI is reportedly in discussions with Windsurf, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered coding tool, to acquire the technology in a deal worth $3 billion. This would be OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date, according to a report from Bloomberg citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter. The terms of the deal are not finalized, and talks could still change or fall apart.

Windsurf, formally known as Exafunction, was recently in discussions with investors to raise $3 billion, having been valued at $1.25 billion in a deal led by General Catalyst last year. Both OpenAI and Windsurf declined to comment when reached by Bloomberg.

If completed, the acquisition could help OpenAI meet the growing market demand for AI-enabled coding software, a space where rivals like Anthropic, Anysphere, and Microsoft-owned GitHub are already operating. OpenAI is also developing a social media platform similar to X, with CEO Sam Altman privately seeking feedback about the project from outsiders. The project involves an internal prototype focused on ChatGPT’s image generation with a social feed.

In addition to these developments, OpenAI has launched GPT-4.1, its latest ChatGPT model, which is cheaper and better than its predecessors. The new model possesses a bigger context window, allowing for longer and more complex inquiries, and can handle text, images, audio, and video. GPT-4.1 is available now as an application programming interface (API) for developers. OpenAI has also rolled out new discounts to lure enterprises to try out its services.

The acquisition of Windsurf and the development of new products are part of OpenAI’s strategy to stay competitive in the AI landscape.
