    Testing Chowbot AI’s Culinary Suggestions in San Antonio

    As a San Antonio native and journalist, I was both intrigued and skeptical when my editors asked me to test Chowbot, the Express-News’ AI-powered search engine, by following its restaurant recommendations for a day. Chowbot draws from restaurant critic Mike Sutter’s reviews, but how well can a machine without taste buds or hunger suggest satisfying meals?

    The Blue Crab omelette was ‘a rich-yet-airy foldover of eggs, Creole cream cheese (complete with crawfish) and Creole hollandaise, topped with Blue Crab.’ I enjoyed the meal, finding the beignets and omelette to be exactly as described.

    The ‘grill-hot pork loin Al Pastor laid over a cushy bed of greens, topped with fresh cucumber, pink onions and grilled pineapple’ was tender and flavorful.

    The meal didn’t disappoint, with ‘deliciously crisp pockets of aromatic, spiced potatoes’ in their samosas and a satisfying lamb tikka masala.

    Drinks and Bar Food at Double Standard

    Finally, Chowbot suggested Double Standard for bar food and drinks. I enjoyed the Sunkissed cocktail, made with Texas vodka, amaretto, and various fruit flavors, alongside their Boudine balls – ‘golden brown morsels of spiced sausage served with a side of remoulade.’

    The Verdict

    To my surprise, Chowbot’s recommendations were spot on throughout the day. While I’m not typically fond of AI, Chowbot won me over with its culinary suggestions. It effectively translated the expertise of restaurant critic Mike Sutter into practical, enjoyable dining experiences across various cuisines in San Antonio.
