Microsoft’s Copilot AI service is facing criticism from users who claim that it continues to enable itself despite their attempts to disable it. The issue has been reported in various environments, including Visual Studio Code (VS Code) and Windows 11.
One developer, known as rektbuildr, reported that Copilot enabled itself across all their open VS Code windows without their consent. Rektbuildr had enabled Copilot only for specific windows containing public repositories, while keeping it disabled for private client projects. The unexpected re-enablement raised concerns about potential data exposure, as some of these private projects contained sensitive information such as API keys and certificates.

The company recently announced plans to use public social media posts from Europeans for AI training unless users opt-out. Mozilla has taken a more user-centric approach with its AI Chatbot in Firefox, requiring users to actively enable and configure the feature.

In the case of Windows Copilot, disabling it now requires using PowerShell and preventing reinstallation via AppLocker, according to Microsoft’s documentation.
