Meta Launches AI App; Zuckerberg Discusses AI Development with Microsoft CEO

Meta Platforms has introduced a new AI app that combines artificial intelligence with social media features, directly competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The Meta AI app, powered by the company’s Llama 4 AI system, includes a ‘discover’ feed that allows users to see how others are interacting with AI, as well as a voice mode for user interaction.

Key Features of Meta AI App

The app enables users to link their Facebook and Instagram accounts, allowing for instant personalization of the user experience through social media context. This approach differentiates Meta’s offering in the crowded AI field by leveraging its social media roots.

    Expert Opinion

“It’s smart for Meta to differentiate its ChatGPT competitor by drawing from the company’s social media roots,” said Mike Proulx, Forrester research director. “The app’s Discover feed is like a version of the original Facebook Feed but focused only on AI use cases.”

    Meta’s Approach to AI

Meta has taken a unique approach to AI development by releasing it as an open-source product for free. The company reports that over a billion people use its AI products monthly. This strategy contrasts with many of its competitors in the AI space.

    Discussion on AI Development

At Meta’s inaugural LlamaCon conference, CEO Mark Zuckerberg engaged in a technical discussion with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella about the pace of AI development and its impact on their companies and the world. Zuckerberg noted that while there’s significant hype around AI, it needs to lead to “massive increases in productivity” reflected in GDP growth.

“This is going to take some multiple years, many years, to play out,” Zuckerberg said.

Nadella drew a historical parallel with the advent of electricity, pointing out that it took 50 years for people to figure out how to change factory operations. “AI has the promise, but you now have to sort of really have it deliver the real change in productivity — and that requires software and also management change, right?” he explained.

Zuckerberg responded, “Well, we’re all investing as if it’s not going to take 50 years, so I hope it doesn’t take 50 years.”

    Conclusion

The launch of Meta’s AI app and the discussion between Zuckerberg and Nadella highlight the ongoing developments in the AI space and the different approaches companies are taking to harness its potential.
