Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Reveals Significant AI Code Generation at Microsoft
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently disclosed that nearly 30% of the company’s code is now written by artificial intelligence. Speaking live alongside Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Nadella stated, “I’d say maybe 20%, 30% of the code that is inside of our repos today and some of our projects are probably all written by software.” The Microsoft CEO emphasized that the proportion of code generated by AI is increasing substantially.
Nadella’s revelation came in response to a question from Zuckerberg about the percentage of Microsoft’s code written by AI. Interestingly, when Nadella posed the same question to Zuckerberg, the Meta CEO admitted he wasn’t aware of the exact figure for Meta but mentioned that the company is developing an AI model capable of building future versions of its Llama family of AI models. Zuckerberg predicted that “probably… maybe half the development is going to be done by AI, as opposed to people, and then that will just kind of increase from there.”
Industry-Wide Trend of AI Code Generation
Other tech industry leaders are observing similar trends. Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently reported that over 25% of new code at Google is now generated by AI. Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke has instructed his team to first demonstrate that AI cannot perform a task before requesting additional staff. Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn announced plans to increasingly rely on AI while reducing dependence on human contractors.
Microsoft’s Strategic Focus on Software
In related news, Nadella emphasized Microsoft’s reliance on software as a strategy to mitigate the impact of inflationary pressures and trade tariffs. During the Q1 earnings call, he stated, “I think if you sort of buy into the argument that software is the most malleable resource we have to fight any type of inflationary pressure or any type of growth pressure where you need to do more with less, I think we can be super helpful in that.”
