The U.S. Department of Labor has expressed strong support for President Trump’s recent executive order aimed at advancing artificial intelligence (AI) education for American youth. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Deputy Secretary Keith Sonderling praised the directive, which establishes the White House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence Education.

The executive order focuses on preparing the American workforce for the challenges of the future by leveraging AI education and workforce development initiatives. According to Secretary Chavez-DeRemer, “The President and I are in complete agreement that protecting and preparing our workforce must be a top priority in advancing his critical AI agenda.” She emphasized her commitment to ensuring the workforce is ready for the future, highlighting Deputy Secretary Sonderling’s expertise in AI as crucial to this effort.

Deputy Secretary Sonderling noted that “Artificial intelligence is reshaping the job market, and it’s critical we equip our workers with the skills they need to lead in this new era.” He applauded President Trump for taking swift action to support AI education and workforce development, particularly through expanding apprenticeships and promoting AI literacy nationwide.

The executive order instructs the Department of Labor to take several key actions:

    • Leverage authorities and financial incentives to increase participation in AI-related apprenticeships.
    • Encourage states and grantees to use Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funding to develop AI skills and support work-based learning opportunities.
    • Collaborate with the National Science Foundation to identify and promote high-quality AI skills education coursework and certifications.
    • Work with the Secretary of Education and the NSF Director to create opportunities for high school students to take AI courses and certification programs.
