Apple Partners with Anthropic on AI Coding Platform
Apple is collaborating with Amazon-backed startup Anthropic to develop a revolutionary “vibe-coding” software platform that leverages artificial intelligence to write, edit, and test code for programmers, according to a Bloomberg News report citing sources familiar with the matter.
This new AI coding system represents an updated version of Apple’s Xcode programming software, integrating Anthropic’s advanced Claude Sonnet AI model. The concept of “vibe coding” involves AI agents generating code, a methodology gaining significant traction in the AI landscape.
While Anthropic declined to comment on the partnership, Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. The tech giant plans to initially deploy this software internally, with its public launch still under consideration, the report added.
This development comes on the heels of Apple’s announcement of Swift Assist, an AI-driven coding tool for Xcode slated for release in 2024. However, the tool was never made available to developers, reportedly due to concerns from Apple’s engineers about potential slowdowns in app development.
The growing popularity of coding assistants in the rapidly evolving AI landscape is evident, with OpenAI – a pioneer in GenAI – reportedly in discussions to acquire AI-assisted coding tool Windsurf for approximately $3 billion, as per a recent Bloomberg News report.
As major tech firms intensify their efforts to dominate the burgeoning generative AI sector, Apple is increasingly partnering with established AI companies. The company is also integrating various on-device AI features to enhance its offerings and attract customers by equipping its devices with more powerful chips designed to handle AI tasks.
This strategic move aligns with Apple’s broader efforts to stay competitive in the AI landscape, including the potential integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT to respond to user queries.
