AI-Driven Coding Boom Creates Debugging Challenge

The rise of AI-based coding tools has promised to accelerate developers’ work, but it’s also led to an explosion in code volume and potential bugs. Israeli startup Lightrun is tackling this issue with its observability platform designed to identify and debug code before it causes problems. The company has just secured a $70 million Series B funding round, bringing its total raised to $110 million.

    Market Demand and Customer Base

The investment underscores both the market need for such tools and Lightrun’s success in meeting that demand. New investor Accel co-led the round alongside existing investor Insight Partners, with participation from strategic backer Citi and other investors. Lightrun’s impressive client list includes major companies like ADP, AT&T, Microsoft, and SAP.

    AI-Based Debugging Solution

Lightrun’s recent launch of its Runtime Autonomous AI Debugger within integrated developer environments (IDEs) has been particularly significant. This tool addresses the current predicament where AI is generating more code, leading to more problems. The company’s revenues have grown more than fourfold since its launch, catching investors’ attention.

    Founder’s Perspective

“Code is becoming cheap but bugs are expensive,” said Ilan Peleg, Lightrun’s CEO and co-founder. The company has achieved a breakthrough with its observability toolset that monitors code in the IDE and understands its behavior alongside production code. Lightrun uses AI-based simulations to predict and fix issues before they arise, automatically adjusting code as it moves into production to prevent interruptions and crashes.

    Future Development Plans

While focused on enhancing its IDE tools currently, Lightrun sees potential expansion into areas like cybersecurity and code creation assistance. The company is addressing a critical issue where an estimated 30-60% of production problems stem from code issues, regardless of whether they were generated by humans or AI.

As Peleg noted, “Everything that poses risk to resilience, we are mitigating.” With its innovative approach to code observability and debugging, Lightrun is well-positioned to tackle the challenges of AI-driven software development.
