Meta Launches AI App to Compete with ChatGPT

Meta Platforms Inc. has launched a standalone AI app with a social media component, marking its entry into the competitive artificial intelligence field. The new app, built on Meta’s Llama 4 AI system, features a ‘discover’ feed that allows users to see how others interact with AI, as well as a voice mode for conversing with the AI.

The app enables users to link their Facebook and Instagram accounts, providing instant personalization through social media context. This approach differs from Meta’s rivals, as the company has chosen to release its AI as an open-source product, with over a billion people using its AI products monthly.

At the inaugural LlamaCon conference, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg engaged in a technical discussion with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella about the rapid development of AI and its impact on their companies and the world. Zuckerberg acknowledged the ‘hype’ surrounding AI, stating that significant productivity increases should be reflected in major GDP growth over multiple years.

“This is going to take some multiple years, many years, to play out,” Zuckerberg said. Nadella drew a parallel with the advent of electricity, noting that it took 50 years for factories to adapt their operations. Zuckerberg responded, “We’re all investing as if it’s not going to take 50 years, so I hope it doesn’t take 50 years.”

The Meta AI app represents the company’s effort to differentiate itself in the crowded AI field while leveraging its social media roots. As AI continues to develop, both Zuckerberg and Nadella emphasized the need for tangible productivity changes and management adjustments to fully realize its potential.
