Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed at Meta’s LlamaCon AI developer event that up to 30% of the company’s code is now written by artificial intelligence. Nadella made this statement during a live conversation with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in Menlo Park, California. The event marks a significant moment in the tech industry’s embrace of AI in software development.

Nadella noted that the proportion of code written by AI at Microsoft is steadily increasing. When asked about Meta’s AI integration, Zuckerberg shared that the company is developing an AI model capable of building future versions of its Llama family of AI models. Zuckerberg’s vision includes potentially having AI handle half of Meta’s development work within the next year.

This discussion comes as major tech companies like Microsoft and Meta, which employ tens of thousands of software developers collectively, are increasingly relying on AI for coding tasks. The trend follows the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022, which has led to AI being used in various tasks including customer service and software development. Other tech leaders, such as Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke, have also highlighted AI’s growing role in coding.

The shift towards AI-assisted coding aims to enhance productivity and software quality. With machines helping to write code, organizations hope to produce more and better software. This development is part of a broader industry trend where companies are reevaluating their workforce needs in light of AI capabilities.
