Johnson & Johnson MedTech (NYSE: JNJ) has announced the launch of its SoundStar Crystal ultrasound catheter in the U.S. market. The catheter is designed for intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) imaging during cardiac ablation procedures. According to the company, SoundStar Crystal offers enhanced image quality compared to other ICE catheters on the market.
Key Features and Benefits
The SoundStar Crystal integrates with Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s Carto 3 mapping system, leveraging AI-powered mapping capabilities to streamline workflow for electrophysiologists. A novel AI algorithm enables the automatic generation of left atrial anatomy using images collected from the ultrasound catheter’s rotation in the right atrium. This integration simplifies the procedural workflow.

Clinical Significance
ICE imaging plays a crucial role in cardiac ablation procedures by providing real-time visualization of the heart. It helps monitor catheter-tissue contact, observe ablation in real-time, and quickly detect procedural complications. The technology also aids in reconstructing cardiac anatomy and facilitating zero-fluoroscopy procedures.
“We’re advancing our legacy in integrated ultrasound catheters with this innovation,” said Jasmina Brooks, president of Electrophysiology at Johnson & Johnson MedTech. “The SoundStar Crystal’s superior image quality, improved maneuverability, and seamless integration with our Carto 3 system can help enable a zero-fluoroscopy workflow, enhancing both effectiveness and safety for healthcare professionals and patients.”
