The Great Debate: Should Attainment of Artificial General Intelligence Be Kept Secret?

The development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a significant milestone in the field of artificial intelligence. AGI refers to AI that matches human intellect and capabilities. The question arises whether AI makers should keep the attainment of AGI secret or disclose it to the world.

    Arguments for Disclosure

Some argue that achieving AGI is a groundbreaking accomplishment that should be shared with the world. The benefits of AGI, such as solving complex problems like cancer, are too significant to be kept hidden. Moreover, keeping AGI secret could be seen as unethical, as it would allow the AI maker to monopolize its benefits while others remain unaware.

On the other hand, revealing AGI could lead to mass panic or its exploitation by malicious actors. To mitigate this, some propose that AI makers should be legally required to disclose their progress toward AGI, allowing for gradual preparation and regulation.

    Arguments for Secrecy

Others argue that AI makers have the right to keep their achievement secret, citing the principle that “to the victor go the spoils.” They believe that the AI maker should be able to decide how to use AGI without external interference. Secrecy could also prevent malicious actors from misusing AGI.

However, keeping AGI secret could lead to a lack of transparency and accountability. Governments might intervene if they suspect an AI maker is nearing AGI, potentially leading to a takeover. This could have geopolitical implications, as nations might seek to acquire AGI to enhance their power.

    Global Implications

One perspective is that AGI should be considered a global resource, shared among nations and entities. This could involve international cooperation and governance, potentially through organizations like the United Nations. However, this raises questions about ownership, control, and compensation for the AI maker.

    Challenges of Secrecy

Even if an AI maker attempts to keep AGI secret, it may be difficult to maintain confidentiality. Developers might share information with friends and family, or the benefits of AGI might become apparent through the AI maker’s actions. Government intervention or takeover could also reveal the existence of AGI.

As Sophocles once said, “Do nothing secretly; for Time sees and hears all things and discloses all.” The attainment of AGI is a complex issue that requires careful consideration of its implications and consequences.
