I’ve never been great with on-device AI features. I have a collection of iPhones, Pixels, and Galaxy devices, each with various helpful tricks, but the numerous options often leave me indecisive. When Motorola introduced Next Move as their Moto AI tool to guide users towards other AI tools, I was skeptical but willing to try it.
How Next Move Works
Next Move isn’t something you need to activate; it’s automatically available whenever you open the Moto AI menu. It adds tailored options to the end of Motorola’s list, encouraging users to use the menu more frequently. For my Razr Ultra, this meant pressing and holding the new AI Key, which is a better implementation of Nothing’s Essential Key.

Using Next Move
Initially, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Next Move’s suggestions. I started pressing the AI Key whenever I would normally perform tasks manually. The more I used it, the more I noticed and utilized the Next Move recommendations. While they weren’t always perfect, they were helpful in many cases.
For instance, when I wanted to save information or add a date to a list, I pressed the AI Key instead of opening my Notes app or Google Calendar. The Moto AI menu offered helpful insights, such as creating a running playlist with Playlist Studio or saving details as a ‘Remember This’ memory. It also provided deep research from Perplexity, which was useful when researching the Erie Marathon.

Limitations and Future Improvements
However, there were times when Next Move felt like it was pushing AI features unnecessarily. For example, it suggested generating an image of people running the Erie Marathon, which wasn’t particularly useful. I also encountered issues with it recommending features like Catch Me Up when I had no notifications waiting.
I’d like Next Move to guide me towards AI features beyond Motorola’s in-house options. While Perplexity was available as an option, it was because it came pre-installed on my Razr. Features like Gemini Live or Copilot could be useful, but they weren’t included in Next Move’s suggestions.
Conclusion
Despite its limitations, Next Move has helped me become more comfortable with Moto AI than I ever thought possible. It’s made Motorola’s AI features feel more approachable and less overwhelming. Perhaps it’s more of a ‘first move’ than a ‘next move,’ but it’s a step in the right direction.
