Apple to Challenge Meta and OpenAI with Smart Glasses Launch in 2026
Apple is set to enter the emerging market of AI-powered devices with its upcoming smart glasses, scheduled for release in 2026. This move positions Apple in competition with Meta Platforms’ popular Ray-Ban smart glasses and OpenAI’s forthcoming AI devices.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple engineers are accelerating work on the smart glasses to meet the targeted release by the end of 2026. The company plans to begin mass-producing prototypes later this year with the help of overseas suppliers.

The Apple smart glasses are expected to feature cameras, microphones, and speakers, enabling them to analyze their surroundings and interact with users through Siri. Potential functions include handling phone calls, music playback, live translations, and turn-by-turn directions, similar to Meta’s current offerings and upcoming devices running on Alphabet’s Android XR operating system.
This development comes as Apple faces increasing competition in the AI device space. OpenAI recently announced a partnership with Jony Ive, former Apple chief design officer, to launch a range of AI-powered hardware products starting next year. Ive’s involvement includes OpenAI acquiring his startup, LoveFrom (previously known as IO).

Apple’s foray into AI-enhanced wearables marks a significant step in the company’s product lineup, potentially transforming how users interact with information and their environment. The smart glasses are part of Apple’s broader strategy to innovate in the AI hardware space, competing directly with major players like Meta and OpenAI.
