Thailand’s tourism police have launched an initiative to modernize crime prevention and enhance public safety by deploying AI-powered surveillance cameras at popular tourist destinations across the country. The system, which became operational in July 2024, has already led to the arrest of 180 suspects in areas such as Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Suvarnabhumi Airport. The AI cameras are connected to central databases containing information on outstanding warrants and criminal records, enabling real-time identification of individuals with pending charges or those considered high-risk.

According to Pol Lt Gen Saksira Phueakum, commander of the Tourist Police Bureau, the technology has been instrumental in monitoring around 600 individuals flagged for suspicious activity, including local and foreign pickpocket gangs and illegal currency exchange groups. When these individuals enter monitored tourist zones, police receive instant alerts, allowing for a rapid response to prevent potential offenses against tourists and residents.

The AI surveillance system has been particularly effective in cracking down on various crimes, including theft, assault, and serious offenses like attempted murder. The success of this initiative has prompted officials to plan an expansion of the AI camera network across all major tourist areas nationwide. This move aims to deter criminal activity and strengthen confidence in Thailand as a safe and secure destination for travelers, ultimately ensuring a better experience for both tourists and local communities.

The implementation of AI-powered surveillance cameras is part of a broader effort to modernize crime prevention strategies, in line with National Police Chief Pol Gen Kittharath Punpetch’s directive. By leveraging advanced technology, the tourism police are working to create a safer environment for visitors while enhancing the overall quality of life for local residents.
