Expanded AI Training for Federal Employees Proposed
A new bill introduced in the House by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) aims to extend artificial intelligence training to a broader range of federal employees beyond the current acquisition workforce. The AI Training Extension Act of 2025 seeks to build upon the Artificial Intelligence Training for the Acquisition Workforce Act, which was signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2022.
The proposed legislation would make AI training available to additional categories of federal employees, including supervisors, managers, and frontline staff in data and technology roles. This expansion is intended to equip federal agencies with the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively and responsibly utilize AI technology.
“As AI transforms the way the world works, our federal agencies must be equipped to keep pace,” Mace stated. “This bill ensures our workforce has the knowledge, tools, and guardrails to use AI effectively, responsibly, and in service of the American people.”
In addition to broadening access to AI training, the bill also aims to ensure that the training includes practical applications, privacy safeguards, security measures, and principles for responsible AI deployment. The training would be aligned with government-wide standards established by the Office of Management and Budget.

The reintroduction of the bill coincided with a House Oversight Committee hearing on AI in the federal government, which Mace chaired. The hearing included discussions about the use of AI in various government contexts.
Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), who had previously co-sponsored the bill with Mace in the 118th Congress, passed away last month. Rep. Shontel Brown (D-Ohio) is now a co-sponsor of the reintroduced bill.
The proposed legislation reflects ongoing efforts to enhance the federal government’s capabilities in AI while ensuring responsible use of the technology.
