Windows Recall Gets Export Feature
Microsoft has added an export function to its controversial Windows Recall feature, allowing users to share their Copilot PC’s snapshots with third-party applications. However, this new feature is currently limited to users living in the European Economic Area (EEA).
Windows Recall has been a subject of debate since its introduction. The AI-powered system captures screenshots of your monitor’s output and stores them in an encrypted local database. This allows users to search for apps, websites, or document text and images. The export feature gives users more control over their data and opens up new possibilities for using Recall with third-party applications.
The decision to roll out the export feature only to EEA users has raised questions about Microsoft’s motivations. The company attributes this move to its commitment to complying with applicable laws and regulations in the region. Users outside the EEA currently cannot access this feature.
There are important caveats to the export function. The Recall database is encrypted, and a unique key is generated when Recall is enabled. Users must keep this key safe, as losing it means they won’t be able to access their data again without resetting Recall, which wipes the database clean.
Microsoft has also made another significant change to Recall. The company has reduced the default storage period for the database from indefinite to 90 days. This change applies to all Copilot+ PC users, regardless of their location.
While the export feature is currently limited to EEA users, it remains to be seen whether other countries will push for similar changes. For now, users outside the EEA can still use Recall, but they won’t be able to export their data for use with third-party applications.
As Microsoft continues to develop and refine Windows Recall, users are advised to be aware of the data being collected and the limitations of the feature, especially if they’re outside the EEA.
