Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud, today announced the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region. This new Region gives developers, startups, entrepreneurs, and enterprises across various industries greater choice for running their applications and serving end users from AWS data centers located in Taiwan. The launch enables customers who want to keep their content onshore to do so while serving their users with even lower latency.
The AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region consists of three Availability Zones at launch, bringing AWS’s total to 117 Availability Zones across 37 Regions globally. As part of its long-term commitment to Taiwan, Amazon plans to invest more than $5 billion to support the construction, operation, and maintenance of its data centers in the region.
“The new AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region will enable organizations of all sizes to build and scale with confidence using our comprehensive suite of cloud services,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS. “Organizations across Taiwan and Asia Pacific can now leverage the same global infrastructure that millions of businesses worldwide rely on, benefiting from single-digit millisecond latency.”
Taiwan’s Premier, Mr. Jung-tai Cho, welcomed the investment, stating, “We appreciate the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region, which shows Amazon’s strong commitment to Taiwan. This investment recognizes Taiwan as a pivotal partner in the global supply chain and demonstrates the solid foundation of collaboration between AWS and Taiwan.”
Active customers in Taiwan using AWS include 104 Corporation, 91APP, Acer, Cathay Financial Holdings, Chunghwa Telecom, CyberLink, Gamania Group, KKCompany, Modernity Financial Technologies (MaiCoin), Trend Micro, TSMC, and Yahoo! TW Ecommerce. AWS Partners in Taiwan include CKmates, eCloudvalley Digital Technology Group, Going Cloud, MetaAge Corporation, Netron Ltd., and NextLink Technology.
The AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region is designed with sovereignty in mind, offering the broadest and deepest portfolio of cloud services, including analytics, compute, content delivery, database, generative AI, machine learning, networking, storage, and more. To support cloud adoption growth, Amazon continues to invest in upskilling students, developers, and IT professionals in Taiwan through programs like AWS Academy, AWS Educate, and AWS Skill Builder.
As part of its commitment to sustainability, Amazon aims to be net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement schedule. A report by Accenture estimates that AWS’s infrastructure is up to 4.1 times more energy-efficient than on-premises infrastructure, and can reduce associated carbon footprint by up to 99% when workloads are optimized on AWS.
The launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region is part of Amazon’s ongoing investments in Taiwan, which include establishing Amazon CloudFront edge locations, AWS Direct Connect locations, AWS Outposts, and AWS Local Zones. These investments enable customers to achieve lower latency, store content securely in Taiwan, and drive innovation using advanced cloud technologies.
