Amazon Announces $10 Billion Investment in North Carolina AI Campus
Amazon is set to invest $10 billion in a new high-tech cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) innovation campus in Richmond County, North Carolina. The project is expected to create at least 500 new high-paying, high-tech jobs in the region.
Governor Josh Stein praised the investment, stating, “Artificial intelligence is changing the way we work and innovate, and I am pleased that North Carolina will stay at the forefront of all that’s ahead as we continue to attract top technology companies like Amazon.” He added that Amazon’s investment is among the largest in state history and will bring significant economic benefits to Richmond County.
The new campus will feature data centers powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), a leading cloud computing solution. These facilities will house computer servers, data storage drives, networking equipment, and other technology infrastructure necessary for cloud computing capabilities and generative AI technologies. AWS enables businesses across various industries, including automotive, healthcare, manufacturing, financial services, and the public sector, to transform their operations.
North Carolina’s business-friendly environment, robust infrastructure, skilled workforce, and growing technology sectors made it an ideal location for this world-class data center infrastructure. David Zapolsky, Amazon’s Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to driving innovation and advancing cloud computing and AI technologies. “This investment will position North Carolina as a hub for cutting-edge technology, create hundreds of high-skilled jobs, and drive significant economic growth,” he said.
Local leaders also welcomed the investment. Senator David Craven noted, “I am excited for Amazon’s $10 billion investment in our community. This project will bring hundreds of good-paying jobs and significant investment to our area for many years to come.” Representative Ben Moss added, “Richmond County is delighted to welcome Amazon to our community. The new jobs created by this facility will change hundreds of lives for the better.”
The Richmond County Board of County Commissioners Chairman, Rick Watkins, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Their selection of the Energy Way Industrial Park represents the largest capital expenditure investment in North Carolina’s history and will serve as a catalyst to transform the local economy, provide high-paying jobs for citizens, and improve the quality of life for all residents.”
The investment underscores Amazon’s commitment to innovation and its confidence in North Carolina’s potential as a technology hub. The project is expected to have a lasting impact on the local economy and contribute to the advancement of AI and cloud computing technologies.
