ECRI Names Prisma Health Winner of the 2025 Health Technology Excellence Award
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., June 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — ECRI, a global independent healthcare and patient safety nonprofit, has named Prisma Health the winner of its 2025 Health Technology Excellence Award. This annual award honors a member facility for implementing an exceptional initiative to improve patient safety, reduce costs, or facilitate better strategic management of health technology.
Prisma Health, the largest healthcare provider in South Carolina, was recognized for its comprehensive approach to advancing technology infrastructure and disaster preparedness. The not-for-profit organization operates 19 hospitals across 12 campuses, including specialized facilities for children, psychiatric care, rehabilitation, and heart care.
As Prisma Health expanded significantly in recent years, including merging health systems and adding new facilities, it faced the challenge of building a resilient technology infrastructure. The organization’s efforts included:
- Strengthening network infrastructure with a regional redundant design to ensure 100% uptime
- Implementing a “tap-in/tap-out” process in the Emergency Department for more efficient and secure access to electronic health records
- Enhancing business continuity efforts through new disaster recovery protocols and tools
These initiatives were put to the test in September 2024 when Hurricane Helene impacted the region. Despite widespread outages, Prisma Health’s proactive measures ensured continuous EMR access, quality care, and faster recovery compared to other healthcare systems in the area.
“We’re proud of Prisma Health’s technology team for their commitment to reliable healthcare delivery,” said Daniel Leonard, Vice President of Technical Services at Prisma Health. “Their work has strengthened our infrastructure and workflows over the past five years.”
Dheerendra Kommala, MD, Chief Medical Officer at ECRI, noted, “Prisma Health has demonstrated a system-wide commitment to safe and innovative technology deployment. They’ve established a blueprint for resilience that the healthcare community can learn from.”
