Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has warned that the company’s increasing reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) may lead to job losses, even as it creates new opportunities. In a memo to employees, Jassy revealed that Amazon is currently using or developing over 1,000 generative AI applications. While some roles may become redundant, he noted that new types of jobs could emerge as AI changes the nature of work.
“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,” Jassy explained. The company expects that the extensive use of AI will reduce its total corporate workforce in the next few years as it achieves efficiency gains.
Amazon is leveraging AI across various aspects of its business, from customer-facing services like Alexa and personalized shopping tools to internal operations such as forecasting, fulfillment, and customer service. The company’s 2024 annual report showed continued revenue growth in both North America and international markets, contributing to a workforce of over 1.55 million full-time and part-time employees.
As revenue continues to climb, Amazon is investing heavily in AI. In 2025, the company announced a $100 billion commitment to meet growing demand and expand its capabilities in generative AI. This move is part of a broader trend among companies turning to AI to streamline operations and boost efficiency.
Other major companies are also embracing AI, sometimes at the expense of human jobs. Klarna announced in 2024 that its AI assistant had taken over the workload of 700 full-time agents, completing tasks more efficiently and quickly. Duolingo is transitioning to an “AI-first” model, gradually phasing out contractor tasks that can be performed by artificial intelligence. Shopify has also instructed employees to pause hiring until they assess whether AI can handle tasks effectively.
As companies like Amazon, Intuit, and Cisco continue to integrate AI into their operations, the job market is likely to undergo significant changes. While AI may replace some roles, it is also expected to create new job opportunities that we cannot yet anticipate.
