Norway to Impose Temporary Ban on Cryptocurrency Mining Data Centres
The Norwegian government has announced plans to introduce a temporary ban on the establishment of new data centres that use power-intensive technology for cryptocurrency mining. The move aims to conserve electricity for other industries that generate more jobs and income for local communities.

According to Minister for Digitalization and Public Administration Karianne Tung, “Cryptocurrency mining is very power-intensive and generates little in the way of jobs and income for the local community.” The Labour Party government has expressed a clear intention to limit cryptocurrency mining in Norway as much as possible.
The temporary ban could be implemented as early as autumn 2025. The government’s decision comes as part of its efforts to manage Norway’s energy resources more effectively.
The Nordic country’s focus on conserving electricity for industries that provide more significant economic benefits to local communities reflects a broader consideration of how to utilize its energy resources efficiently.
