Philips Enhances MRI Capabilities with AI and Sustainable Design
Royal Philips has introduced significant advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology, featuring AI-driven innovations designed to improve patient outcomes and promote environmental sustainability. The company’s latest developments were unveiled at the 2025 European Congress of Radiology (ECR) in Vienna, Austria.
SmartSpeed Precise with Dual-AI Engines
At the core of Philips’ recent advancements is SmartSpeed Precise, a new technology powered by Dual-AI engines. This system promises up to three times faster MRI scanning speeds and an 80% improvement in image sharpness. This combination allows radiologists to detect subtle abnormalities more clearly, potentially leading to better patient care.
MR Workspace R12 and SmartExam
Philips also launched the MR Workspace R12 software. This new software features a ‘zero-click’ workflow, which streamlines the entire imaging process. Additionally, the AI-powered SmartExam automates approximately 80% of MR procedures, standardizing workflows and reducing the need for manual input. The goal is to improve efficiency, reduce backlogs, and address the shortage of radiologists.
Next-Generation Helium-Free BlueSeal Scanner
Philips also showcased its next-generation 1.5T BlueSeal wide-bore scanner. This next-generation scanner reduces reliance on helium, a valuable resource that is facing supply and demand challenges. Since 2018, Philips BlueSeal technology has conserved nearly 5 million liters of liquid helium. These systems also reduce energy consumption, saving approximately 40 MWh annually per system. With over 1,500 installations worldwide, this technology demonstrates a significant commitment to environmental sustainability in medical imaging.
Impact and Benefits
These innovations address key challenges in healthcare: reducing scan times, improving image quality, and promoting sustainability. Philips is aiming to meet the evolving needs of healthcare providers worldwide
“By integrating high performance-enhancing AI engines across our entire portfolio of new and installed helium-free BlueSeal scanners, we are revolutionizing MRI efficiency while reducing environmental impact,” said Ioannis Panagiotelis, PhD, Global Business Leader MRI at Philips.
These new advancements by Philips reflect a strategic shift towards AI-driven and eco-friendly solutions in medical imaging.
