Meta’s Potential $200 Billion Data Center Investment

Reports indicate that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, may be planning a significant investment in a new data center campus in the United States. The project’s potential cost could reach an astounding $200 billion, according to a report from The Information.

Executives from Meta have been visiting potential sites for the massive campus. Louisiana, Texas, and Wyoming are all under consideration as possible locations. Data center developers have been informed about the plans.

However, a Meta spokesperson, as quoted by Reuters, has denied the report. The company stated it had already disclosed its capital expenditure and data center spending plans for the current year, and described any further speculation as “pure speculation.”

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared last month that the company plans to bring approximately 1GW of compute online this year. The company anticipates a fleet of more than 1.3 million GPUs by the end of 2025.

Meta has told investors it plans to invest between $60 and $65 billion on capital expenditure, mainly for data centers and servers. The company is also aiming to grow its AI teams “significantly.”

Meta already has plans for Louisiana, with a $10 billion data center campus in Richland Parish currently under development. This campus is expected to offer a 2GW compute capacity at full build-out. The site spans 2,250 acres of the former Franklin Farm megasite, roughly 30 miles east of Monroe, between the municipalities of Rayville and Delhi. The campus will extend over 4 million sq ft (371,610 sqm). Renderings of the anticipated campus suggest up to nine buildings are planned. Construction was scheduled to start on this site in December 2024 and continue through 2030.

In Wyoming, building is underway on a 945-acre site located south of Cheyenne, the state’s capital. A campus covering 800,000 sq ft (74,320 sqm) is planned for the site, with construction expected to last about three years.
