Amazon has officially launched Alexa+, an upgraded digital assistant built on large language model (LLM) AI, for select Echo devices. The company has been hinting at this AI integration for a while, and now the rollout is underway.
This new version of Alexa will be free for Amazon Prime subscribers, offering the best value for experiencing the upgraded features. For non-Prime members, Alexa+ will be available as a standalone subscription for $19.99 per month.
Users have the option to choose whether or not to use Alexa+. The current version of Alexa will still be accessible to anyone who already uses it.
The enhanced Alexa experience introduces several improvements, including a more natural, conversational style. Interacting with Alexa will resemble having a personal assistant, allowing you to describe your needs in various ways. This update significantly improves Alexa’s ability to manage smart home devices, calendars, and more. It can even notify you when tickets are available for events or help you find and book services.
This advancement signifies the next generation of digital assistants for Echo devices, potentially setting the stage for future development of more advanced “AI” capabilities. Although the technology has considerable development to be made, this is the point where companies feel ready to integrate a subscription model.
Support for Alexa+ will be limited to more modern Echo devices. Customers who are looking to purchase an Echo device should check product descriptions to ensure that the device is compatible with Alexa+. Initially, the rollout will be limited to the Echo Show 8, 10, 15, or 21 models. Owning one of these devices will spread access to other Echo devices, with the exception of some older models. Non-screen models will only support a voice-only experience.
