Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud services arm of Amazon, is set to invest approximately $8.2 billion in the western Indian state of Maharashtra over the next few years. This substantial commitment was announced on Monday by India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

This investment aligns with India’s growing emphasis on developing its local cloud data storage capabilities. According to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC), the Indian cloud services market, valued at $8.3 billion in 2023, is projected to reach $24.2 billion by 2028.
“Along with the investment, there will be significant growth in employment,” stated Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology. He added that the investment rollout is expected to be completed by 2029-2030.
Vaishnaw further elaborated that Amazon will deploy its own graphics processing units, the latest technologies, and cloud management services within India. The e-commerce giant already operates two data centers in the Indian subcontinent: one launched in Mumbai in 2016 and another in Hyderabad, which began operations in 2022.
Last year, Amazon revealed plans to invest an additional $2 billion in India, recognizing the country’s position as Asia’s third-largest economy, to bolster its e-commerce business.
In a separate development, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Minister for Communications and Development in the North-East Region, highlighted India’s significant advancements in technology and telecommunications, signaling a new era of digital leadership and economic prosperity. Speaking at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona on Monday, the minister announced that the 9th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) will be held in New Delhi from October 8 to 11, 2025.
“Under the visionary guidance of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are witnessing a fundamental transformation that is empowering citizens and fostering innovation,” Scindia noted.
Organized by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), IMC 2025 is anticipated to be a major industry event, bringing together leaders, policymakers, and technology enthusiasts. The event will offer a platform to explore the future of connectivity, sustainability, and digital innovation while tackling key challenges and opportunities within the rapidly evolving global digital landscape.
