Aberdeen Tech Firm Fennex Wins Prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise

Fennex co-founder and strategy director Nassima Brown
Fennex, an Aberdeen-based technology company, has achieved a significant milestone by winning its first King’s Award for Enterprise. The digital firm specializes in developing predictive safety software for the offshore energy industry and was recognized for its excellence in international trade, one of four categories in the annual King’s Awards scheme now headed by HRH King Charles.

Fennex co-founder and strategy director Nassima Brown expressed her emotional response to the news, stating, “First of all, we were shocked, but then it’s the confidence of knowing this is the highest accolade for business recognition in the UK.” She added that the King’s Award emblem, recognized worldwide, would “transform Fennex in so many ways” and help the company “achieve bigger and greater things faster.”

The firm’s achievement is particularly noteworthy given its rapid growth since its establishment in 2016 by Brown and her husband Adrian, both “proud ex-oil and gas” professionals. Fennex has doubled its international sales growth and plans to double in size again within the next two years. The company now operates in over 20 countries, with 42,000 end-users, and its safety solutions are deployed across more than 70 global operated assets.

Brown highlighted Fennex’s ambition to become a £100 million company in 10 years, employing 300 or 400 people across Scotland. The company has worked closely with major industry players, including US-headquartered drilling giant Noble Corporation, to develop its technology on offshore drilling rigs. This collaboration has enabled Fennex to scale its operations globally, with clients such as Transocean, Stena Drilling, ExxonMobil, and Chevron.

Fennex has also expanded its services to meet the needs of offshore wind developers and contractors, launching an application called WindSafe in partnership with the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership (OWGP). Brown emphasized the company’s expertise in driving innovation and its potential to lead the way in digital technology for the energy sector.

The King’s Awards scheme, instituted by royal warrant in 1965, recognizes outstanding achievements in various categories, including international trade, innovation, sustainable development, and promoting opportunity. Fennex’s win is a testament to its focus on growth and its position as a leader in the digital technology and green energy sectors.

Sir Ian Wood, chairman of Opportunity North East (ONE), praised Fennex as a great example of entrepreneurial digital technology founders growing and scaling their business. He noted that the company’s success is part of the northeast digital ecosystem’s growth, highlighting the potential for Aberdeen to drive the next era in digital tech.

Fennex’s achievement comes on the back of other notable recognitions, including being shortlisted in Shell’s Livewire competition as a global top 10 innovator, the only UK company working in both offshore wind and oil and gas sectors to receive this honor.
