Advocate Health, a healthcare system operating 69 hospitals across six states, has made significant progress in its AI deployment journey. According to Andy Crowder, chief digital officer, the organization has over 15,000 users engaging with AI tools such as AI assistants, ambient listening, and predictive analytics. Crowder noted that Advocate is experiencing five key benefits from its AI deployment.
Reduced Clinician Burnout
AI tools are lowering clinicians’ cognitive burden and stress by automating documentation and surfacing relevant patient information. For instance, ambient listening models can reduce the time nurses spend on documentation by up to three and a half hours per day. This shift is improving job satisfaction among clinicians, allowing them to focus on patient care rather than administrative tasks.
Better Staff Retention
With improved job satisfaction comes better staff retention. Crowder highlighted that the turnover rate among nurses using Artisight’s computer vision platform for virtual nursing dropped from 13% to 3%. This platform uses smart sensors and machine learning systems to unlock previously inaccessible data, monitor for falls and pressure ulcers, and detect patient movements.
Clinical Improvements
Using Artisight’s platform to monitor for adverse events is leading to better patient outcomes. Nurses can intervene before situations escalate, and the technology is decreasing unnecessary interventions. For example, the platform can detect when a patient turns over during sleep, eliminating the need for nurses to perform this task.
Enhancing the Patient Experience
Virtual nursing technology is improving patient satisfaction by allowing family members to feel comfortable leaving their loved ones alone in the hospital. Ambient listening tools also enhance patients’ trust in their providers by enabling more natural conversations between patients and clinicians.
Cost Savings
Advocate’s AI tools are generating cost savings through reduced falls and pressure ulcers, shorter hospital stays, and lower overtime hours for clinicians. As Crowder noted, more efficient providers can take on more patients, further increasing the organization’s capacity.
