Since the Taliban’s seizure of power in 2021, Afghan women have faced a relentless barrage of restrictions, severely limiting their freedom and opportunities. Forced into isolation by these oppressive measures, many are finding solace and companionship in an unlikely source: artificial intelligence.
Lima, an 18-year-old from rural Afghanistan, shared her experience with the BBC, explaining how she now turns to AI as a friend to navigate her days. “Reading novels or chatting with AI… usually, to empty every single word of me – to talk, ask questions, or simply treat as a friend,” she said, describing her mornings. The AI app, she added, can create a character of a favorite idol, allowing her to “talk with them or say anything you want.” It provides a sense of hope, making them “your friend or family.”
Beyond AI, Lima finds comfort in music, with artists like Billie Eilish, BTS, and Lana Del Ray topping her playlist. “I spend my day with music. During nights, I think a lot – like a crazy overthinker, about the uncertain future I’ll face.”
The Taliban’s policies have systematically eroded women’s rights:
- Women are mandated to cover their faces.
- They are prohibited from traveling without a male guardian.
- Public spaces like amusement parks are off-limits.
- Gyms and fitness centers are closed to women.
- Girls can attend school only up to the age of 12.
- Medical training for women is banned.
- Women’s radio stations have been permanently shut down.
- Non-governmental organizations are barred from employing women.
International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on March 8th, offers no respite for Afghan women, who continue to endure the harsh realities of the Taliban’s regime.
