AI-Generated Image Fuels Land Dispute in Malaysia
An artificial intelligence-generated image of a durian farm has intensified the ongoing controversy over alleged illegal durian plantations in Malaysia’s Pahang state. The image has sparked speculation about additional hidden farms in the region’s dense forests, while experts warn about the lack of safeguards against manipulated content.

The dispute over control of the state’s lucrative durian trade has escalated recently, with allegations of orchards encroaching on government land and farmers resisting efforts to remove their trees. State ruler Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah expressed his outrage at the alleged encroachment, stating that his ‘blood boils’ at the reports.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) investigated after a man uploaded the AI-generated image to a Facebook group dedicated to generative AI, Prompters Malaya. The image showed durian fruit growing in a forest clearing, captioned as being from a ‘hidden spot.’ The MCMC determined that the content was generated using artificial intelligence and noted that it had led to public speculation and negative perceptions about illegal planters in Pahang’s Raub district.
The image was initially shared within the AI enthusiasts’ group but later circulated outside without context, fueling beliefs that more illegal farms were hidden in the area’s dense forests. This incident highlights the potential of generative AI to cause real-world problems by spreading misinformation and manipulated content.
Experts warn that the lack of safeguards against manipulated content poses significant challenges. As generative AI technology becomes more accessible, the risk of its misuse in spreading false information increases, potentially leading to serious consequences in sensitive areas such as land disputes and environmental issues.
