Align Technology Releases AI-Driven X-ray Software in Europe and the UK
Rotkreuz, Switzerland — March 10, 2025 — Align Technology, a global leader in medical devices and the makers of the Invisalign System, iTero intraoral scanners, and exocad CAD/CAM software, has announced the launch of Align X-ray Insights in the European Union and the United Kingdom. This new software uses artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically analyze 2D radiographs.
As part of the Align Digital Platform, Align X-ray Insights is designed to help dentists:
- Diagnose dental and oral health conditions
- Standardize analysis
- Streamline workflows
- Improve patient engagement
A survey of early users indicated that the technology assisted 95% of them in explaining patients’ oral health conditions. Furthermore, 91% reported that it improved patient trust and acceptance of restorative procedures when shown to patients. After diagnosis, doctors can use the software’s detailed reports, automated tooth charting, and color overlays of radiographic abnormalities for patient education and treatment planning. AI detection features include caries, periapical radiolucencies, and periodontal bone loss, among other conditions.
This technology complements Align’s existing offerings, such as the Align Oral Health Suite which provides a clinical framework for improving oral health conversations.. Align X-ray Insights enhances the diagnostic capabilities of iTero intraoral scanners and the Oral Health Suite, aiding doctors in treatment planning. The goal is to give doctors access to the best data, based on patient records
“Integrating AI into radiographic analysis empowers our doctors with more precise diagnostic capabilities, ultimately improving patient outcomes,” said Simon Beard, Align Technology’s executive vice president and managing director for Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). “This launch highlights our dedication to innovation and the ongoing expansion of our digital platform.”
Professor Falk Schwendicke, director of the Dental Clinic at the University of Munich, added, “Align X-ray Insights is bringing diagnostic AI capabilities to dentists all over the world. When we started our journey towards AI in dental diagnostics, we had hoped to improve patient outcomes via better diagnostics and treatment decisions.” Schwendicke also noted that Align X-ray Insights improves patient communication and systematic reporting, which helps dentists integrate other Align products.
Align Technology acquired dentalXrai GmbH in 2022 and has since worked to integrate its product into the Align Digital Platform. Align X-ray Insights is a cloud-based software that can be accessed via desktop, tablet, or through iTero integration. The desktop and tablet version will be generally available in the European Union and United Kingdom starting March 25, 2025, and will be presented at the IDS tradeshow in Cologne, Germany, from March 25-29, 2025. Integration with iTero intraoral scanners is underway.
Align X-ray Insights has received regulatory clearance in Europe, the UK, Canada, and New Zealand, with further availability planned in other countries.
