Amazon and Stellantis End SmartCockpit Collaboration

Amazon and Stellantis End SmartCockpit Collaboration

In early 2022, automaker Stellantis announced a partnership with Amazon to develop SmartCockpit, a software designed to revolutionize the in-car infotainment experience. The technology was slated to debut in Stellantis vehicles starting in 2024, promising to integrate AI-enhanced apps, Alexa voice controls, and personalized features adapted to drivers’ behaviors and interests. However, the deadline passed without the software’s release, and both companies have now confirmed to Reuters that they are ‘winding down’ the SmartCockpit development.

The mutual decision to end the collaboration wasn’t accompanied by a stated reason, but a joint statement explained that it would allow both companies to ‘focus on solutions that provide value to our shared customers and better align with our evolving strategies.’ Initially, Stellantis had envisioned SmartCockpit running in millions of its vehicles globally, creating a seamless link between customers’ digital lives and their driving experience. The project represented one of several instances where automakers have sought tech companies’ expertise to overcome software development challenges. Other industry players, such as Google with its Built-In service and Apple with CarPlay Ultra, are also vying for control of vehicle screens, indicating a broader trend in the automotive technology landscape.

The SmartCockpit cancellation comes as some automakers, like Volkswagen, have faced significant software-related issues that delayed projects. As the industry continues to evolve, the partnership landscape between tech giants and automotive manufacturers remains dynamic, with multiple players competing to shape the future of in-car technology.
