Amazon Expands Global Operations, Prioritizing Speed and Location

Amazon is making significant changes to its global operations, with a strong focus on speed and strategic location. The e-commerce giant is continuing to expand its European arm of Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the world’s largest cloud computing services. This expansion necessitates a substantial commitment to sustainable energy sources.

Amazon’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its substantial investments in renewable energy projects throughout Europe. According to a recent sustainability news release, Amazon was recognized as the top corporate purchaser of renewable energy in Europe as of early February. These efforts support AWS’s European operations and contribute to a cleaner energy future.

Over the past few years, Amazon has invested heavily in renewable energy projects across Europe. A 2023 Amazon Europe news release confirmed the execution of 39 renewable energy projects in 2022, generating over 3,900 local jobs. Further investments were announced in the latest February release, detailing 46 new wind and solar projects across Spain, Greece, Finland, Portugal, the UK, France, Czechia, and Ireland.

With the addition of these new projects, Amazon’s European portfolio now comprises over 230 initiatives, boasting a combined output of approximately nine gigawatts of clean energy. This is enough to power 6.7 million European homes annually, according to the February news release.

“Increasing the amount of renewable energy on Europe’s electricity grids is the fastest and cheapest way to help Europe’s economy decarbonise at scale and fight against climate change,” said Lindsay McQuade, director of energy for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Amazon, according to Technology Magazine.

Amazon’s dedication to renewable energy exemplifies the global shift towards a greener economy. The clean energy sector is experiencing rapid growth, providing investors and countries alike with significant opportunities to invest in and shape the future of the world’s energy landscape.

These projects are also generating local employment, boosting global economies while demonstrating that economic prosperity and environmental health can coexist. Clean, renewable energy can help to mitigate rising global temperatures by providing innovative solutions to reduce environmental impact, ensuring a safe and healthy planet for future generations.

According to Technology Magazine, Amazon’s chief sustainability officer, Kara Hurst, stated: “When it comes to addressing climate change, speed and location matter. From collaborating on new energy policies, to accelerating renewables in underserved regions, Amazon is working to help decarbonise grids around the world as quickly as possible.”
