Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon, is set to inject $8.2 billion into the western Indian state of Maharashtra over the next several years, according to Indian Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, as reported by Reuters on Monday.
Vaishnaw indicated that the investments are slated to be rolled out by the 2029-2030 timeframe. Amazon intends to deploy its latest technologies, graphics processing units, and cloud management services within India. The company already operates two data centers in the country: one in Mumbai, which commenced operations in 2016, and another in Hyderabad, launched in 2022.
This significant investment aligns with the broader growth trajectory anticipated for the Indian cloud services market. International Data Corp. projects the market to expand to $24.2 billion by 2028, up from $8.3 billion in 2023.
Previously, Amazon announced a $12.7 billion investment plan to bolster its cloud infrastructure in India by 2030. In 2025, AWS revealed plans for the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Thailand) Region, with an investment exceeding $5 billion. This new region is projected to contribute approximately $10 billion to Thailand’s GDP and support over 11,000 full-time-equivalent jobs annually.
Adding to its strategic investments, Amazon recently disclosed plans to allocate around $100 billion towards artificial intelligence initiatives for 2025. CEO Andy Jassy stated that a substantial portion of these funds will be directed to AWS, which provides software tools and manages data centers.
