Amazon is making a major push into agentic AI, the next generation of artificial intelligence. According to internal communications obtained by Reuters, the company has established a new group specifically focused on task automation, signaling a significant commitment to this technology.
The initiative is reportedly being led by Swami Sivasubramanian, AWS AI and Data VP, who will report directly to Matt Garman, the cloud computing giant’s CEO.
While Amazon hasn’t publicly confirmed these plans, agentic AI is viewed as the next evolution in the field, and a critical focus for many of Amazon’s competitors.
“Agentic AI has the potential to be the next multi-billion business for AWS,” Garman wrote in an email. “We have the opportunity to help our customers innovate even faster and unlock more possibilities, and I firmly believe that AI agents are core to this next wave of innovation.”
Amazon is not new to agentic AI. The recently previewed Alexa+ voice assistant highlighted agentic capabilities, although agentic AI is more commonly used in enterprise level applications. This is something Amazon likely wants to capitalize on.
Devices & Services VP Panos Panay wrote, giving the example of a broken oven: “Alexa+ will be able to navigate the web, use Thumbtack to discover the relevant service provider, authenticate, arrange the repair, and come back to tell you it’s done—there’s no need to supervise or intervene.”
In addition, AWS SVP Peter DeSantis announced that some divisions would be reorganized to “accelerate innovation.”
Amazon’s primary competitors, Microsoft and Google, are likewise developing their own agentic AI. Salesforce is also making significant investments in this area; Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff envisions the next generation of CEOs managing both humans and AI agents simultaneously.
