Amazon Challenges EU’s ‘Very Large Online Platform’ Label in Court
Amazon has taken its grievance to Europe’s second-highest court, asking it to scrap the company’s designation as a ‘very large online platform’ (VLOP) under the European Union’s landmark Digital Services Act. The tech giant argues that it poses no systematic risks to its users.
The Digital Services Act, which came into force in 2022, requires Big Tech companies to take additional measures to tackle illegal and harmful content on their platforms. Amazon’s challenge was made to the Luxembourg-based General Court after the European Commission classified it as a VLOP.
Amazon’s legal action represents a significant pushback against the EU’s regulatory efforts. The company maintains that its platform does not pose systemic risks, and therefore should not be subject to the stricter requirements imposed on VLOPs.

The outcome of this case could have implications for other major tech companies operating in the EU. The Digital Services Act is part of the EU’s broader efforts to regulate Big Tech and create a safer online environment for users.
This legal challenge is part of an ongoing debate between major tech companies and EU regulators about the appropriate level of oversight and regulation in the digital marketplace.
